12.14: Crowding at London Bridge, Brixton, Stratford, Paddington and Kings Cross has returned to normal levels, TfL says.
12.11: TfL had claimed a 1,000-strong army of volunteers would keep the capital moving.
But the TSSA union said LU's helpers failed to show up, leaving police officers to control crowds outside Tube stations.
The union said 26 police officers were on duty outside Brixton station and more than a dozen in Stratford, controlling crowds and re-directing passengers to buses.
Mr Cortes said: "Boris Johnson should be charged with wasting police time. Last week, he claimed he had a 1,000-strong army of volunteers who would keep the capital moving.
"Well, they proved to be a phantom army. Just like his pledge to keep all Tube ticket offices open, this turns out to be another inoperative statement.
"Let us end government by gimmick in London and get down to serious face-to-face negotiations to end this dispute. Londoners and the travelling public deserve better than a mayor who has trouble distinguishing truth from fiction."
Meanwhile, the RMT has called for an inquiry after claiming there was "lethal overcrowding" at Waterloo station.
12.03: Interesting response from the Institution of Engineering and Technology to today's strike action.
Paula-Marie Brown, IET Head of Transport, says:
Quote Over recent years, travelling on the London Underground has been transformed by noticeable changes in technology, for example with the introduction of the Oyster card and WiFi on station platforms as well as the introduction of new rolling stock.
"Other changes are less obvious, such as the introduction of automated driving systems on the Central and Jubilee Lines which gives a more frequent service to the passenger. Fare collection innovation will continue with contactless payment using bank cards just around the corner.
"Technology has and will continue to transform our journeys underground. There is already a long history (since 1968) of technology controlling trains automatically on the Victoria Line.
"Most passengers will be unaware that a high majority of Victoria, Central and Jubilee Line journeys are operated by automated systems, with the driver being there to deal with perturbation and provide reassurance to the travelling public.
